Seeing through the lens of ‘creative expressionism,’ Jasmine Powell is an emerging transmedia artist in dance, visual art, and education. Continuing on her lifelong journey of exploring the many diverse forms of art and their meaning, Jasmine completed her B.A. in Dance from Oberlin College and has an M.F.A in Dance from Hollins University (a program done in collaboration with American Dance Festival, Forsythe Company and Frankfurt University for Music and Performing Arts).

Jasmine has performed with the Collage Dance Company, Dance Diaspora/Essence (Oberlin College), and has performed and choreographed for the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) D2. She is currently a local member of COMPANY and KT COLLECTIVE dance company. In addition to such notable experiences, she has had the pleasure of training and performing original work by Dianne McIntyre, Ronald K. Brown, Milton Myers, and Culture Mill/ Murielle Elizeon and Tommy Noonan enabling her to collaborate with creators domestically and internationally.

As a creative expressionist, Jasmine boldly embraces the vision of diverse art forms as a distinct way of storytelling and exploring relationship across disciplines. With a solid background in the biological sciences and scientific research, she continually finds ways to integrate the inherent curiosity of biology, the health of the physical body, and embodied movement through artistic expression. By streaming such diverse perspectives and insights into her creative process, her multidisciplinary approach is creating an artistry that is equal parts health, healing, and wholeness through creativity.

As Bebe Miller so eloquently put it “the difference in performance is between seeing yourself being seen, versus feeling yourself being felt.” Jasmine is thankful to have learned the value in exploring organic movement of the body’s personal story, and is constantly pursuing dance genre unification, deeply exploring the ways opposite embodied features and expressions coexist.

Local to Durham dance and native to Hillsborough, NC, Jasmine is happy to return where her roots began, and is excited to perform in the NCDF 2022/2023 season as she is currently on faculty in the Performing Arts department as a professor at Elon University.
